LIVING ROOM
An interactive exhibition that re-adapts a living room, where people can adjust the lighting setting to their comfort using a lighting controller, serving as a conversation starter about what people think of as comfort in a domestic shared space, utilising the sense of sight.
Ideation
A speculative design project to re-imagine, adapt and design everyday objects and spaces using bodily comfort as a single design criterion while embracing various divergent body abilities, needs, and comfort dynamics. Since bodily comfort is subjective, what one deems comfortable could be uncomfortable for others. And with humans navigating the world through their senses, sight being the most dominant among them, it is also fallible. Humans perceive the world differently based on their genes, injuries, diseases, mental illnesses, personalities, and cultural backgrounds. And with Land increasingly scarce due to rising living costs and a growing population. In the future, more people will need to share a living space, whether by choice or not. Sharing a space with others is not always easy. You must constantly adjust and be mindful of others because you don’t have complete control over how a space should be used, as each person's needs and wants are different.
Lighting Controller While the exhibition’s central theme is sight and light, this doesn’t mean it is only for the sighted. Studies have shown that good lighting helps people with sight loss navigate the house. That’s why the Controller is made accessible for the visually impaired. The colour palette was verified using “Coolors” to ensure it contrasts enough for any visually impaired person to distinguish. Provide braille using Unified English Braille (UEB) Code and elevated text, since only 7% of registered blind or partially sighted use Braille. There are three different types of buttons to indicate the physical difference.
